Canada’s recycled aluminium sector: Key initiatives since 2021
Canada is using a mix of federal funding, provincial recycling rules and private investment to build a stronger market for recycled aluminium. Over the past five years, policy changes and new projects have improved scrap collection, added remelting capacity and reinforced the country’s position as a low-carbon aluminium hub. Recycled aluminium requires up to 95 per cent less energy than primary metal and emits far less carbon dioxide. That makes it strategically important for decarbonisation, supply security and cost control in automotive, construction, packaging and other sectors. Canada already has a large primary aluminium industry and well-established scrap systems; recent initiatives are now focused on tightening the loop between scrap collection, recycling and end use. St Helens launches foil recycling campaign with ‘scrunch test’
St Helens Borough Council and Alupro are urging residents to improve aluminium foil recycling through a month-long campaign focused on better sorting at the kerbside. St Helens Borough Council has launched a month-long campaign to help residents identify and recycle aluminium foil correctly through their kerbside collections. The Foil me Once campaign, delivered in partnership with Alupro, is running throughout September with radio advertising, social media content, website information and media coverage aimed at improving awareness of metal packaging recycling. A central part of the campaign is the ‘scrunch test’, which residents can use to distinguish aluminium foil from plastic packaging that may look similar. If packaging stays scrunched into a ball, it is likely to be aluminium and...

EGA expands European aluminium recycling footprint with 80% Eco Green acquisition
Emirates Global Aluminium has completed its acquisition of an 80 per cent stake in Italy's Eco Green, strengthening its aluminium scrap collection, sorting and recycling network across Europe. Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) is expanding its aluminium recycling business in Europe with the completed acquisition of an 80 per cent stake in Italian recycler Eco Green, adding scrap collection, sorting, casting and dross-processing capabilities to its growing recycled aluminium network. The deal, first announced in April, has cleared all required regulatory approvals and closing conditions. Eco Green will now be rebranded EGA Eco Green, while the Scappini family will retain a minority stake and remain involved in management. The acquisition gives EGA access to a wider pool of aluminium scrap in...

Weak domestic markets are holding back aluminium scrap sorting investments, WBCSD study finds
A WBCSD study says advanced sorting technology is available, but stronger demand for grade-specific secondary aluminium is needed to unlock investment. Technology for sorting mixed aluminium scrap has advanced significantly, but weak domestic markets for some recovered grades are limiting investment in automated sorting infrastructure, according to a study by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD). The study, conducted through WBCSD's North America Aluminum Initiative, examined whether technologies such as X-ray transmission (XRT) and laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) could help transform mixed aluminium scrap into higher-quality, grade-specific secondary metal for domestic use. Its conclusion is that technology is only part of the equation. Recyclers...

Advanced sorting could unlock $2.3 billion in US aluminium scrap value: WBCSD
Advanced sorting technologies could help the US unlock up to USD 2.3 billion in annual domestic aluminium processing value by upgrading mixed scrap that is currently exported or downcycled, according to a new initiative by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD). The North America Aluminum Initiative, launched by WBCSD’s Critical Materials Collective, examined how technologies such as X-Ray Transmission (XRT) and Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) could separate mixed aluminium scrap into alloy-specific streams. The initiative also assessed whether complementary demand from different industries could support investment in advanced sorting infrastructure. The opportunity is significant because around 2 million tonnes of US aluminium scrap are exported...

Buying Indian secondary aluminium? Start with these seven verifications
Secondary aluminium is increasingly central to Europe’s decarbonisation plans. It is used in automotive castings, construction profiles, packaging and consumer goods and is valued because it can deliver similar mechanical properties to primary metal while requiring a fraction of the energy and emitting far less carbon dioxide. The European Union’s Emissions Trading System (ETS) and the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) have made low-carbon aluminium a strategic priority. As India’s scrap aluminium imports have continued to rise, from 0.88 million tonnes in CY15 to nearly 2 million tonnes in CY25, with a long-term CAGR of about 8.6 per cent, stronger traceability and licensing requirements are becoming increasingly important across the secondary aluminium supply chain. For this...

Trimet builds 40,000-tpa aluminium scrap sorting hub as recycled metal demand rises
Trimet is bringing aluminium scrap sorting and processing in-house at a new German facility, using laser technology to improve recycled metal quality and raw material security. Trimet Aluminium is preparing to open a new aluminium recycling site in Hamm, Germany, as growing demand for recycled metal puts greater pressure on international scrap markets. The facility, which is scheduled to start operations in October, will process and sort aluminium scrap at a planned capacity of 40,000 tonnes per year. Trimet said the site will strengthen supplies of high-quality recycled raw materials to foundries and remelting plants while reducing its reliance on external processing partners. Laser technology sorts 150 pieces of scrap per second The centrepiece of the new operation is an automated...

More US aluminium scrap heads to Asia amid domestic supply concerns
The United States exported about 1.25 million tonnes of aluminium-bearing scrap in the first half of 2026, up 21 per cent from 1.03 million tonnes during the same period last year. The figures, based on US Census Bureau data cited by Davis Index, show that more recycled aluminium is leaving the country even as domestic producers and policymakers debate whether the material should be retained to support US supply chains. Thailand and India lead purchases Thailand was the largest destination for US aluminium scrap in the first six months of 2026, receiving 268,000 tonnes. India followed with 233,350 tonnes, while Malaysia, South Korea and Hong Kong rounded out the top five destinations with 160,700 tonnes, 139,500 tonnes and 136,200 tonnes respectively. All five markets increased their...
