AAC welcomes Canada’s implementation of smelt and cast reporting for aluminium imports
The Aluminum Association of Canada (AAC) welcomes the integration of country of smelt and cast reporting into Canada’s Aluminum Import Monitoring Program (AIM), effective October 1, 2026. This milestone strengthens transparency across aluminium supply chains and equips authorities with better information to monitor trade flows and identify potential circumvention. Canadian aluminum exports face a fresh blow as US tariffs climb to 100%
Canadian aluminum fabricators are warning that their US sales could disappear after the latest US tariff measures pushed duties on some aluminum products to as high as 100 per cent, making Canadian-made goods less competitive in the US market. The new measures include a 50 per cent US tariff on aluminum products that previously benefited from exemptions. When combined with the existing 50 per cent tariff rate on foreign supplies, some products now face a total levy of 100 per cent. For Canadian manufacturers that rely heavily on US customers, the change is already affecting export plans. Apex Aluminum Extrusions rejects US relocation as tariffs threaten exports
A Canadian aluminium extruder is refusing to move its production to the US despite facing a sharp increase in tariffs that could effectively shut it out of one of its largest markets. Apex Aluminum Extrusions, based in Langley, British Columbia, says more than 40 per cent of its sales previously went to the US. The company expects those exports to fall to zero as US tariff measures on aluminium extrusions intensify. Darren McQueen, head of Apex, said the combined impact of the latest measures would result in a 100 per cent tariff on the company's selling price from September 15, after Section 338 tariffs are stacked on top of Section 232 duties. Alcoa says Canada tariff cut alone won't bring US aluminium premium down
A cut in US tariffs on Canadian aluminium alone is unlikely to bring down the elevated Midwest aluminium premium significantly, according to Alcoa CFO Molly Beerman, as the US still relies on imports from other countries to cover a structural supply gap. Speaking at the Jefferies Global Industrials Conference in New York, Beerman said the US needs to import around 4 million tonnes of aluminium a year, while Canadian suppliers can provide roughly 3 million tonnes. Canada is using a mix of federal funding, provincial recycling rules and private investment to build a stronger market for recycled aluminium. Over the past five years, policy changes and new projects have improved scrap collection, added remelting capacity and reinforced the country’s position as a low-carbon aluminium hub. Recycled aluminium requires up to 95 per cent less energy than primary metal and emits far less carbon dioxide. Canadian Energy Metals has demonstrated a process for producing smelter-grade alumina from Saskatchewan black shale and has started a prefeasibility study for its Thor Project. Canadian Energy Metals Corp. (CEM) has taken a step towards developing an alternative North American source of alumina after demonstrating that material derived from its Saskatchewan black shale resource can be converted into smelter-grade alumina (SGA). Canada doubles US steel and aluminium tariffs to 50% as trade conflict escalates
Canada will raise tariffs on US steel and aluminium to 50 per cent from September 8 as part of a CAD 27.6 billion (USD 19.88 billion) retaliatory package, while Ottawa introduces CAD 7.5 billion (USD 5.4 billion) in support for workers and businesses affected by the trade dispute. Canada will double its tariffs on US steel and aluminium from 25 per cent to 50 per cent , while imposing additional duties on more than 700 American products as trade tensions between the two countries intensify.
