From black shale to smelter feed: CEM advances North American alumina supply chain

Canadian Energy Metals has demonstrated a process for producing smelter-grade alumina from Saskatchewan black shale and has started a prefeasibility study for its Thor Project.
Canadian Energy Metals Corp. (CEM) has taken a step towards developing an alternative North American source of alumina after demonstrating that material derived from its Saskatchewan black shale resource can be converted into smelter-grade alumina (SGA).
The company said testing has consistently produced SGA samples meeting the same purity and specifications as alumina made through the Bayer Process, the established industry route for refining bauxite.
The result expands the potential development pathway for CEM's Thor Project, where the company is pursuing alumina alongside strategic and critical metals from black shale rather than relying on conventional bauxite feedstock.

Black shale opens alternative alumina route
CEM's process converts boehmite produced from precursors associated with high-purity alumina (HPA) and chemical-grade alumina (CGA) into SGA, the principal feedstock for aluminium production.
The latest proof-of-concept follows an earlier milestone in January, when CEM demonstrated the recovery of HPA and CGA from the Thor Project's black shales.
The company said the SGA results show that the material can potentially support a broader range of alumina products, extending beyond the higher-purity applications evaluated previously.
That could give the Saskatchewan project a potential route into the aluminium value chain while also retaining the opportunity to recover other strategic and critical metals contained in the resource.
Thor project moves into prefeasibility
The study is expected to assess the project's mining, refining and smelting pathways, while developing preliminary capital and operating cost estimates and examining infrastructure, logistics and market options.
It will also upgrade confidence in the resource and determine whether the project has sufficient technical, economic and commercial viability to advance towards a full Feasibility Study.
CEM's Preliminary Economic Assessment, filed in May 2026, had already examined the potential economics of producing high-purity and potentially high-value alumina products from the black shale resource.

Building a North American alumina supply chain
The project is being positioned not simply as an alumina development, but as a potential integrated North American aluminium supply chain.
CEM holds a 100% interest in the Thor Project in northeast Saskatchewan, adjacent to Tisdale. The company's stated objective is to establish potential pathways from resource extraction through processing and ultimately delivery to customers.
For North America, the company sees domestic production as a potential response to supply-chain vulnerabilities affecting critical materials.
"The processes we've developed over the last two years with our leading engineering partners are rapidly advancing North America's first fully integrated aluminum project," said Christopher Hopkins, President and CEO of CEM.
He added, "We are proud of this achievement and are accelerating the Prefeasibility Study."
CEM is continuing process optimisation and advanced piloting work as part of the PFS, while also extending exploration across its mineral rights for additional critical-metal potential.
The next stage will therefore determine whether the black-shale-to-alumina process can move beyond proof-of-concept towards a commercially viable project capable of supplying alumina to the North American aluminium industry.
