AlumaPower, Canada’s Sarnia-based manufacturer of aluminum-powered generators, has secured a C$4 million ($2.81 million) federal grant to advance its technology towards commercial launch. The funding, provided through the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario) under the Regional Defence Investment Initiative (RDII), would be reinforcing the company’s expansion into defense and telecommunications markets. $1.5b Quebec AP60 expansion puts Rio Tinto at heart of low-carbon aluminum race
The low-carbon aluminum market has stepped into a more competitive phase as producers invest in cleaner smelting technologies, renewable power and new downstream applications. Rio Tinto’s $1.5 billion AP60 smelter expansion in Quebec is the latest major development, adding around 160,000 metric tons per annum (MPTA) of primary aluminum capacity when fully operational by the end of 2026. The project will lift total AP60 production at Complexe Arvida to about 220,000 MPTA while supplying lower-carbon aluminum to transportation, construction, electrical and consumer-goods customers. Arconic’s massive aluminum rolling mill in Iowa will retain a property tax valuation of about $50.1 million after the Iowa Court of Appeals rejected the company’s challenge to the assessment. In a ruling filed October 7, 2026, a unanimous three-judge panel affirmed the lower court’s determination that the industrial complex in Scott County had an actual value of $50,102,085 as of January 1, 2023. The decision leaves the Riverdale portion valued at $47.62 million and the smaller Bettendorf parcel at approximately $2.48 million. Novelis produces first coil at Alabama's $5bn aluminum rolling and recycling plant
Novelis Inc. has produced the first coil on the cold mill at its $5 billion Greenfield aluminum recycling and rolling plant in Bay Minette, Alabama, marking a major commissioning milestone for one of the largest new US aluminum manufacturing investments in decades. The first-coil production moves the facility closer to customer qualification and commercial shipments, which Novelis said remain on track to begin in the second quarter of 2027. Rio Tinto is connecting its Kitimat aluminum production with a new British Columbia-based supply chain through a long-term agreement with RevoCast Aluminum Billets Ltd., under which aluminum from BC Works will be combined with recycled aluminum to produce billet for North American manufacturers. Announced on September 28, the agreement gives Rio Tinto exclusive marketing rights for aluminum billet produced at RevoCast’s newly commissioned Langley casting facility. Small businesses await US tariff refunds as shipping firms process claims
Small businesses are facing delays in receiving refunds for tariffs struck down by the US Supreme Court, with companies that paid duties through shipping firms such as FedEx, DHL and UPS waiting longer to recover their money. Asher Rapkin, owner of California watch retailer Collective Horology, said he submitted paperwork in March to recover USD 164,000 in tariffs but did not receive any money until September. He initially received a USD 59,200 wire transfer without an explanation of which transactions had been refunded.
