Ghana is exploring further foreign investment in its Nyinahin bauxite deposits, with the Ghana Integrated Aluminium Development Corporation (GIADEC) hosting a delegation from Guinea’s ORG Technology at the site on November 1, 2026. The visit took place just three days after Ghana agreed with Russia’s Rusal to jointly develop part of the same deposit.

The delegation was led by GIADEC Deputy Chief Executive Officer Maxwell Essien and included representatives of ORG Technology. Atwima Mponua District Chief Executive Ibrahim Issahak received the team in Nyinahin, in the Ashanti Region.

The visit signals interest from another foreign company in a deposit that Ghana has been seeking to develop for several years. However, no details were provided about ORG Technology’s proposed role, whether it has made a formal investment commitment or how its involvement would relate to the recently announced Rusal agreement.

The Nyinahin deposits are estimated to be worth around USD 17.5 billion, with the potential to generate nearly 98,000 jobs. Issahak said "It has the capacity to generate more jobs for the people and transform the economy to keep it on the path of sustainable growth." He identified the search for suitable investors as a major obstacle to moving the project forward.

Rusal agreement outlines mine and refinery plans

Ghana announced its agreement with Rusal on October 29 during the Russia-Africa summit in Moscow. Under the arrangement, Rusal and GIADEC will establish two joint ventures, Nyinahin Bauxite and Ghana Alumina Company, with Rusal holding majority stakes in both.

The proposed development includes a bauxite mine with annual production capacity of up to 5 million tonnes and an alumina refinery capable of processing 1.2 million tonnes per year. Rusal said the designated development area contains more than 100 million tonnes of bauxite.

The project forms part of Ghana’s broader plan to develop an integrated aluminium industry. Bauxite from Nyinahin would be processed into alumina at a refinery in Ghana before being supplied to the Volta Aluminium Company (VALCO) smelter in Tema. VALCO would then produce aluminium for domestic downstream industries.

Ghana seeks to move Nyinahin project forward

GIADEC has pursued several partnerships for the Nyinahin deposit since 2021. In 2025, the government cancelled a USD 1.2 billion lease held by local company Rocksure International as it sought a foreign development partner.

In January 2026, GIADEC, its special purpose vehicle Ghana Integrated Bauxite Development Limited Company, and UAE-based Metalloïd Resources Investment signed a USD 60 million financing facility to begin mining activities on hills one to three of the concession.

GIADEC Chief Executive Officer Reindorf Twumasi Ankrah said in February that commercial bauxite mining at Nyinahin was expected to begin by the end of 2026, in order to meet offtake obligations.

With that deadline approaching, the latest visit by ORG Technology adds another potential investor to Ghana’s efforts to develop the deposit.
