Alurion’s Amargosa bauxite project gets clearance for 11.5Mtpa road haulage
Alurion Resources has cleared a key logistics hurdle for its Amargosa bauxite project in Brazil, with an independent study confirming that Bahia’s public road network can support haulage of up to 11.5 wet million tonnes per annum (Mtpa). The assessment by transport engineering firm Engimind covers three potential haulage levels of 5.75, 8.625 and 11.5 wet Mtpa. Its findings double the original scoping study base case and give Alurion a defined road route as it advances towards a Prefeasibility Study (PFS) targeted for mid-2027. CLSA expects the Odisha High Court’s dismissal of Vedanta Aluminium Metal’s bauxite petition to have a muted medium-term impact, despite a potential one-time liability and higher aluminium production costs. The Odisha High Court dismissed Vedanta Aluminium’s petition seeking bauxite supplies from Odisha Mining Corporation (OMC) at the historical rate of INR 1,000 (USD 10.38) per tonne. CLSA said the order could result in a one-time financial impact of up to USD 290 million, including interest, while also increasing the company’s aluminium production costs. The brokerage estimated OMC’s claim for historical dues at around INR 2,500 crore (USD 59.50 million) before tax, excluding interest. US bauxite imports decline 14.5% in H1 2026 while volumes climb 6.9%
US imports of bauxite and other aluminum ores and concentrates fell 14.5% year-on-year to $68.46 million in the first half (H1) of 2026, according to Trade Map data. In terms of volumes, however, imports rose 6.9% year-on-year to 1.27 million metric tons, from 1.19 million metric tons in H1 2025. The decline in value followed a 5.7% increase during H1 2025. The H1 2026 import value was also 9.7% below the $75.77 million recorded in H1 2024, while volume was 8.3% lower than the 1.39 million metric tons recorded that year. Last week, domestic ore prices remained generally stable. The supply side of domestic ore showed a continuous tightening trend, driving some traders and alumina refineries to purchase Turkish ore for blending purposes. Factories in Shanxi and Henan regions hope to further increase the usage of imported ore to ensure production. Mysteel expects domestic ore prices to have a slight upside room in the short term. Regarding imported ore, according to Mysteel’s research, a large mine in Guinea significantly raised its October quotation. Canyon Resources’ plans to bring its Minim Martap bauxite project in Cameroon into production, have been thrown into fresh uncertainty after AFG Bank Cameroon suspended further drawdowns from the project’s syndicated financing facility. The bank suspended access to the remaining funds on August 24, 2026, pending a review of the project’s development schedule, financial model and underlying economic assumptions. The move comes as Canyon acknowledges that it will not meet its Phase 1 development timetable and has removed its previous first-shipment target without setting a new date. Leading Indian aluminium producer Vedanta has renewed its push to revive bauxite mining at Odisha’s Niyamgiri hills, about 13 years after the proposed project was shelved. With Niyamgiri hosting around 80 million tonnes of bauxite reserves, the renewed proposal brings the resource potential of the Kalahandi-Rayagada belt back into focus. Russia-based aluminium producer RUSAL is exploring a potential sale of its Windalco bauxite and alumina operations in Jamaica, signalling a possible reshaping of its Caribbean footprint. The reported move also extends to its bauxite interests in Guyana, although both potential transactions remain at an early stage and may not ultimately proceed.
