WEEKLY: Bauxite prices capped by high refinery stocks
During China's National Day holiday (October 2-8, 2026), domestic bauxite supply showed no major swings, with persistent bottlenecks continuing to cap output. Routine environmental inspections across several inland regions kept weighing on domestic ore production. Offsetting this tightness, however, alumina refineries are holding inventories at elevated levels, while relatively ample imported ore volumes are capping domestic bauxite prices. Mysteel anticipates that domestic ore prices will struggle to register any meaningful upside in the near term. Guinea bauxite shipment reaches China through new sea-rail route
A shipment of 168,000 tonnes of bauxite from Guinea has arrived at Fangchenggang Port in Guangxi, southern China. The first batch of cargo was transported by rail to Wanzhou in Chongqing on October 3, supplying raw materials to a mineral production base in the city. The new route connects overseas bauxite supplies with inland industries through Beibu Gulf Port. According to Beibu Gulf Port Group, it offers a direct sea-rail transport link from the port to Chongqing. The route cuts transit time by about 25 days compared with the traditional river-sea route via the Yangtze River. It is expected to improve the movement of bulk raw materials to industrial businesses in southwest China. Bauxite transport and traceability: Why tracking the cargo back to the mine is difficult
Bauxite is the starting material for alumina refining and primary aluminium production, but its route from mine to refinery is rarely as simple as a labelled shipment moving from one country to another. Unlike fabricated metal products, bauxite is usually traded as a loose bulk mineral. It is loaded into stockpiles, trucks, rail wagons, barges and bulk carriers, often passing through multiple handling points before reaching an alumina refinery. This logistics model keeps transport costs low for a high-volume commodity, but it also makes mine-level origin difficult to establish. EGA announces first Guinean bauxite shipment under renewed agreement on way to UAE
Emirates Global Aluminium, the largest industrial company in the United Arab Emirates outside oil and gas, today announced that the first shipment of Guinean bauxite under a renewed agreement with Compagnie des Bauxites de Guinée is on its way to the UAE. Some 66 thousand tonnes of bauxite were loaded onto a Panamax vessel at Kamsar in late August. The renewed agreement between EGA and Compagnie des Bauxites de Guinée is for up to 4.9 million tonnes per year of bauxite until 2044. Bauxite is the feedstock for alumina refineries. Last week, domestic ore prices remained generally stable. The supply side of domestic ore showed a continuous tightening trend, driving some traders and alumina refineries to purchase Turkish ore for blending purposes. Factories in Shanxi and Henan regions hope to further increase the usage of imported ore to ensure production. Mysteel expects domestic ore prices to have a slight upside room in the short term. Regarding imported ore, according to Mysteel’s research, a large mine in Guinea significantly raised its October quotation. With FOB prices remaining stable, ocean freight increased by US USD 3.5 per tonne to US USD 36 per tonne.
