ABx Group’s 37Mt Sunrise bauxite project opens for public comment in Queensland
ABx Group’s proposed Sunrise bauxite project in Queensland, Australia, has reached a milestone in the federal environmental approval process. Its referral under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) Act is open for public comment until October 26. The greenfield mine is proposed for Binjour, about 115 km southwest of the Port of Bundaberg and 25 km west of Gayndah. Project documents indicate annual production of 600,000 to 800,000 tonnes of run-of-mine (ROM) and product bauxite, with an upper limit of approximately 1.2 million tonnes per annum. The mine is expected to operate for 20–25 years. Metro Mining reviews 2026 bauxite guidance after channel disruption and staffing setbacks
Metro Mining Limited is reviewing its full-year 2026 shipment guidance after operational disruptions at its Bauxite Hills Mine in Queensland, Australia, constrained barging capacity and equipment utilisation. The company shipped 659,000 tonnes of bauxite in September, bringing year-to-date shipments to 4.013 million tonnes. In an operational update dated October 12, 2026, Metro Mining said a sand-bank collapse reduced the depth of its barging channel from 1.8 metres to 1.3 metres during September, limiting the movement of bauxite. India’s bauxite imports jump 129.5% in H1 2026: Quality gap, refinery expansion outpace 25Mt domestic output
India is producing around 25 million tonnes of bauxite a year, has 4.958 billion tonnes of bauxite resources, and currently produces around 9.5 million tonnes of alumina annually. Yet instead of declining, the country's bauxite imports have been rising. India’s bauxite imports reached 3.70 million tonnes in H1 2026, more than twice the 1.612 million tonnes recorded in H1 2025. The increase of 2.088 million tonnes, or 129.5 per cent, has brought a key question into focus: why are imports rising when domestic bauxite production appears sufficient for current alumina output? Metro Mining’s concern over Rio Tinto’s Aurukun plans brings 3.1Bt bauxite in focus
Metro Mining has raised concerns over Rio Tinto’s proposed acquisition of the Aurukun bauxite project in Cape York, warning that the leases could remain undeveloped under the mining giant’s ownership. The Novas Minas project will maintain MRN’s 12.5 million metric tons/year bauxite output while strengthening supply links across Brazil’s aluminum chain. Brazilian bauxite producer Mineração Rio do Norte (MRN) is investing R$9 billion ($1.8 billion) to extend operations at its mining complex in Pará through 2041, securing long-term production from new reserves near its existing sites. MRN has operated in northern Pará since the 1970s and first applied for environmental approval to extend the mine’s operating life in 2018.
