Bauxite transport and traceability: Why tracking the cargo back to the mine is difficult
Bauxite is the starting material for alumina refining and primary aluminium production, but its route from mine to refinery is rarely as simple as a labelled shipment moving from one country to another. Unlike fabricated metal products, bauxite is usually traded as a loose bulk mineral. It is loaded into stockpiles, trucks, rail wagons, barges and bulk carriers, often passing through multiple handling points before reaching an alumina refinery. This logistics model keeps transport costs low for a high-volume commodity, but it also makes mine-level origin difficult to establish. India invites applications for new mineral exchanges with bauxite among five tradable minerals
India is moving to establish a formal market for mineral trading, with the Indian Bureau of Mines (IBM) inviting applications from eligible companies to set up new mineral exchanges by November 2. The exchanges can initially facilitate trading in iron, chromite, bauxite, limestone and manganese, either individually or in combination. Other minerals may subsequently be added with prior approval from IBM, subject to exclusions specified under the rules. Alurion’s Amargosa bauxite project gets clearance for 11.5Mtpa road haulage
Alurion Resources has cleared a key logistics hurdle for its Amargosa bauxite project in Brazil, with an independent study confirming that Bahia’s public road network can support haulage of up to 11.5 wet million tonnes per annum (Mtpa). The assessment by transport engineering firm Engimind covers three potential haulage levels of 5.75, 8.625 and 11.5 wet Mtpa. Its findings double the original scoping study base case and give Alurion a defined road route as it advances towards a Prefeasibility Study (PFS) targeted for mid-2027. EGA announces first Guinean bauxite shipment under renewed agreement on way to UAE
Emirates Global Aluminium, the largest industrial company in the United Arab Emirates outside oil and gas, today announced that the first shipment of Guinean bauxite under a renewed agreement with Compagnie des Bauxites de Guinée is on its way to the UAE. Some 66 thousand tonnes of bauxite were loaded onto a Panamax vessel at Kamsar in late August. The renewed agreement between EGA and Compagnie des Bauxites de Guinée is for up to 4.9 million tonnes per year of bauxite until 2044. Bauxite is the feedstock for alumina refineries. Yantai Port's rail freight corridor crosses 10Mt as African bauxite heads to Shanxi
Yantai Port's growing role in China's bauxite and aluminium supply chain has come into focus after its Dezhou-Longkou-Yantai rail freight corridor surpassed 10 million tonnes of total cargo. The milestone was reached as 3,200 tonnes of African bauxite moved from the Shandong port to an aluminium processing plant in Shanxi province. The bauxite shipment departed Yantai Port on September 29, travelling along a railway network that stretches roughly 1,000 kilometres and connects the coastal port with inland industrial markets. The corridor now serves 25 destinations across five provinces and regions - Shandong, Hebei, Shanxi, Shaanxi and Inner Mongolia.
