Downstream weekly: Novelis opens new aluminium rolling line while PMB Technology seeks to increase silicon production in Bintulu

During Q1 of 2023, Italian machine tool manufacturers experienced decreased order intake in domestic and foreign markets. The Economic Studies Department & Business Culture Centre of UCIMU-SISTEMI PER PRODURRE reported a 23.7% decline in machine tool orders, with an index score of 125.1. However, Italian manufacturers could still utilize more than 86% of their manufacturing capacity and had an order backlog that covered 8.6 months of production, achieving a record high. On May 22nd, Novelis Inc. announced the launch of a new roll-forming development line. This development line will help Novelis meet the industry demand for a process that can produce high-strength aluminium automotive components in large volumes. PMB Technology Bhd aims to increase the output of metallic silicon by 50% in its Phase 3 plant project in Samalaju Industrial Park, Bintulu. Silicon is commonly used in aluminium alloy production to improve fluidity without degradation.

Order intake for Italian machine tool manufacturers fell significantly in Q1 2023 when compared to the same phase in 2022, both in domestic and foreign markets.
