BIS Chennai puts aluminium alloy conductor standard under industry review
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) Chennai Branch Office held a ‘Manak Manthan’ on September 18, 2026, to discuss Draft IS 398 (Part 4):2026, which sets specifications for aluminium-magnesium-silicon alloy stranded conductors used in overhead transmission applications. The session brought together stakeholders involved in the manufacture, testing and use of aluminium alloy stranded conductors. August unwrought aluminium alloy imports continued to recover mom, export growth narrowed
In August 2026, unwrought aluminium alloy exports were 51,600 tonnes, up 77.6 per cent YoY but down 11.9 per cent M-o-M. Cumulative exports from January to August 2026 were 348,700 tonnes, up 100.1 per cent Y-o-Y. By import source, in August 2026, China’s imports of unwrought aluminium alloy were highly concentrated in Russia and Southeast Asian countries. The top five sources that month—Russia, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, and South Korea—totalled 55,200 tonnes, accounting for 77.2 per cent of total imports. Specifically, Russia ranked first with 18,000 tonnes (25 per cent), followed closely by Malaysia with 17,500 tonnes (24 per cent); Thailand recorded 11,500 tonnes (16 per cent), Vietnam 4,800 tonnes (7 per cent), and South Korea 3,400 tonnes (5 per cent). India’s EU aluminium scrap access falters under new waste shipment rules
Fresh tensions surrounding aluminium scrap procurement befalls a nation that sources 80-85 per cent from overseas to meet its domestic aluminium scrap demand. India could face restrictions on importing aluminium scrap and other metal waste from the European Union (EU) under a new Waste Shipment Regulation (WSR) framework scheduled to take effect in May 2027. The European Commission has proposed an exemptions list for non-OECD countries and opened a public consultation that will run until October 16. NALCO to cut the import cord; invites EoI for aluminium fluoride and smelter inputs
National Aluminium Company Limited (NALCO), India’s Navratna aluminium major, has invited Expressions of Interest (EoI) from joint venture partners, manufacturers, investors and collaborators to establish production facilities for aluminium fluoride (AlF₃), calcined petroleum coke (CPC) and coal tar pitch (CTP). Issued on September 21, the three EoIs form part of NALCO’s backward integration strategy to secure critical raw materials for aluminium smelting , reinforce its Angul expansion and reduce import dependence. Bühler celebrates 20 years of die-casting collaboration with Hyundai
Swiss technology group Bühler is marking 20 years of collaboration with Hyundai Motor Group. The partnership began with the installation of the first machine, an Evolution 270D, at Hyundai’s Ulsan complex in South Korea two decades ago. US aluminum tariffs push Canadian beer can costs up nearly 13%
US tariffs on aluminum are raising the cost of beer cans in Canada, putting pressure on breweries that rely on a closely linked cross-border supply chain. Walkerville Brewery in Windsor, Ontario, have so far avoided passing the higher costs on to customers. However, owner Mike Brkovich said the brewery may have to raise prices in the next three or four months as costs continue to increase. He said, “We’re going to have to increase the prices, I think, in the next three or four months. But we’re trying to hold the prices.” One of the clearest impacts is on aluminum cans. Brkovich said the cost of a 473 ml beer can has increased from around 31 cents to 35 cents following the tariff changes. Futures: SHFE aluminium closed at RMB 24,375 per tonne in the previous trading session, edging down 0.04 per cent. The price stood above the MA10 (24,304) and MA30 (24,089.5), but slightly below the MA5 (24,258). Short-term moving averages flattened, while the medium-term bullish alignment remained intact, with the market consolidating at highs overall. On the MACD indicator, DIF=129.53 and DEA=139.74. DIF stayed above the zero axis but maintained a death cross, with the histogram at -20.43, indicating weakening bullish momentum and lingering short-term correction pressure. The Bureau of Indian Standards has seized about three tonnes of aluminium foil intended for pharmaceutical packaging from a Rohtak-based firm over suspected violations of India’s mandatory quality-certification rules. The Haryana office of BIS said it recovered about 250 rolls of foil, with an estimated value of INR 1.4 million (USD 14,695), during an enforcement operation at Jainalco Industries Limited. BIS cites missing licence According to BIS, the foil was covered by Indian Standard IS 16011, which applies to aluminium and aluminium-alloy foil used for pharmaceutical packaging. The agency said the company was found in possession of the material without a valid BIS licence, even though the product is subject to a Quality Control Order. Motilal Oswal has maintained its “buy” rating on Vedanta Aluminium Metal, saying production growth, lower costs and a bigger share of value-added products could support a multi-year expansion in earnings.
