BIS seizes pharmaceutical aluminium foil worth ₹1.4m from Rohtak firm

The Bureau of Indian Standards has seized about three tonnes of aluminium foil intended for pharmaceutical packaging from a Rohtak-based firm over suspected violations of India’s mandatory quality-certification rules.

The Haryana office of BIS said it recovered about 250 rolls of foil, with an estimated value of INR 1.4 million (USD 14,695), during an enforcement operation at Jainalco Industries Limited.

BIS cites missing licence

According to BIS, the foil was covered by Indian Standard IS 16011, which applies to aluminium and aluminium-alloy foil used for pharmaceutical packaging.

The agency said the company was found in possession of the material without a valid BIS licence, even though the product is subject to a Quality Control Order. Such orders require notified products to comply with the relevant Indian Standard and be covered by the required certification before they are manufactured, sold or distributed.

The seizure followed a search conducted by officers from the BIS Haryana Branch Office on August 25. The evidence collected will be used to determine further enforcement and legal action under the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016, and applicable rules.

Packaging quality and public health

Pharmaceutical-grade aluminium foil is used to protect medicines from moisture, light and contamination. BIS said the Quality Control Order covering the product is designed to safeguard public health by ensuring packaging materials meet prescribed quality standards.

“The QCO for aluminium foils for pharmaceutical purposes was aimed at protecting public health by ensuring the quality of such products,” Madhurima Madhav, Director and Head of the Haryana Branch Office, said.

BIS said it would continue enforcement action where certification requirements are not followed. The announcement describes suspected compliance breaches; it does not state that the seized aluminium foil was unsafe or that the company has been found guilty of an offence.
