30G-ready aluminium capacitors: KYOCERA AVX unveils vibration-proof AEVA, AEVB series

US-headquartered global manufacturer of advanced electronic components, KYOCERA AVX has launched two new aluminium electrolytic capacitor series, viz., AEVA and AEVB, designed for high-vibration and high-temperature resistance in industrial applications such as robotics, motor controls, photovoltaic inverters, DC/DC converters, UPS systems etc.

The objective of developing the AEVA and AEVB series is to address mechanical stress, a primary limitation for aluminium electrolytic capacitors used in demanding industrial environments. Mack Cartagena, Staff Research Development Engineer at KYOCERA AVX, stated, “Mechanical stress has long been a critical concern for aluminium electrolytic capacitors.”

In order to improve vibration resistance, KYOCERA AVX has integrated plastic supports within the compact surface-mount design. Meanwhile, shaping the specialised terminations increase the soldering area and strengthen the connection between the capacitor and circuit board.

The capacitors use liquid electrolytes and offer high-CV performance in relatively compact packages. They can withstand acceleration of up to 30G, while the temperature range extends to +125°C.

The series also features low ESR, low leakage and long endurance, with rated lifetimes reaching up to 5,000 hours at rated voltage and 125°C. Both are compatible with lead-free manufacturing and RoHS requirements.

The components are supplied on 15-inch reels and are compatible with reflow soldering, enabling automated placement.

AEVA and AEVB specifications

The AEVA Series is available in five case sizes — 0810, 1010, 1213, 1616 and 1821.

It covers rated voltages from 6.3VDC to 100VDC and capacitance from 10μF to 4,700μF, with an operating temperature range of -55°C to +125°C. Endurance reaches up to 4,000 hours at rated voltage and 125°C.

The AEVB Series comes in four case sizes — 0810, 1010, 1213 and 1616.

It features voltage ratings of 16VDC to 50VDC and capacitance from 47μF to 2,200μF, with an operating range extending from -40°C to +125°C, while endurance reaches up to 5,000 hours at rated voltage and 125°C.

Aiming for demanding industrial applications

KYOCERA AVX mentioned that new aluminium electrolytic capacitors are intended for equipment exposed to sustained vibration and elevated temperatures. Target applications include robotics, embedded motor control units, photovoltaic inverters, power tools, DC/DC converters and uninterruptible power supplies.

Cartagena noted that the new plastic support and specialised terminations were designed to “significantly improve board-mounting strength and ensure reliable performance under up to 30g of acceleration.”

The launch marks the expansion of KYOCERA AVX’s aluminium capacitor portfolio while addressing applications where compact component design, vibration resistance and high-temperature endurance are increasingly gaining importance.
