2A USA bets $32m on Auburn aluminium die-casting facility expansion

Italian aluminium die-casting company 2A USA will invest USD 32 million to expand its manufacturing facility in Auburn, Alabama, increasing its capacity to produce large and complex aluminium components for the North American heavy truck industry.

The expansion is expected to create 50 jobs and strengthen the company’s ability to supply advanced aluminium parts made in the US.

2A USA is a Tier I automotive supplier, supplying components directly to vehicle manufacturers or major vehicle-system companies. The company is the North American division of Turin-based 2A S.p.A.

Emphasising that the project reflects the importance of advanced manufacturing to the state’s economy, Alabama Governor Kay Ivey stated, “Advanced manufacturing is a pillar of Alabama’s economy and 2A USA’s presence and growth in our state is a testament to its products and company standards.” 

She added, “It is also a strong vote of confidence in Alabama’s workforce and our pro-business environment.”

Capacity for heavy truck components

The Auburn facility will expand its production capacity for casting and machining large aluminium components used in heavy trucks.

For manufacturers, aluminium die casting can help produce complex parts in a single component or reduce the number of separate pieces required. The process also supports lightweighting, which is increasingly important for commercial vehicles seeking greater fuel efficiency, payload flexibility and lower operating emissions.

The new investment is intended to expand 2A USA’s ability to manufacture these components closer to its North American customers.

Alabama Commerce Secretary Ellen McNair said the project highlighted the role of foreign investment in the state’s manufacturing economy.

“The company’s continued expansion is a success story for foreign investment in Alabama,” McNair noted.

She added, “Foreign investments play a key role in Alabama’s economy and 2A’s expansion highlights what is possible when companies locate in a state and community that take seriously the shared goals of long-term growth. As 2A increases its capacity in the automotive supply chain, Alabama is honoured to continue to provide the skilled workers needed to feed that growth.”

2A USA builds on Alabama presence

2A USA entered Alabama in 2014 after acquiring an existing plant in Auburn Technology Park West. The company subsequently installed die-casting and machining equipment at the site before announcing a further USD 15 million expansion in 2019.

The latest project is the company’s second expansion of the Auburn plant, according to 2A’s company history. Business Alabama has reported that construction on the new expansion has begun.

Cavaliere Carlo Ilotte, Founder and CEO of 2A, said, “Over the years, Auburn has become an important part of our company’s story,” and that the company’s growth has been supported by its engineering capabilities and customer relationships.

Vincenzo Ilotte, Chief Operating Officer of 2A, said, “This investment reflects our trust in our U.S.-based customers as well as in our capable team here in Auburn.”

The company’s expansion will increase its role in the US and North American automotive supply chain while supporting domestic production of aluminium components for heavy truck manufacturers.

Investment supports the Auburn community

Auburn Mayor Ron Anders described the project as a major investment in the local community and welcomed the company’s continued relationship with the city.

“We are extremely grateful for the Ilotte family making such a significant investment in our community and further intensifying the partnership between 2A and the City of Auburn.”

Further details on the expansion are awaited, as the announcement did not disclose the project’s expected completion date, the specific production increase or the types of heavy truck components to be manufactured.
