Vietnam aluminium firms seek zero export duty to counter cheaper imports
Vietnamese aluminium businesses are seeking a reduction in export duties to zero, arguing that the current tax rules put domestic suppliers at a disadvantage compared with imported materials. The Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) has raised concerns over a proposal to cut export duties on unwrought aluminium, bars, rods, profiles and wire to 1 per cent from 5 per cent. The proposed duty on aluminium plates, sheets and strip in coils would be reduced to zero. Citing feedback from the Vietnam Aluminium Profile Association and businesses, VCCI said the proposed 1 per cent rate would bring little revenue to the state budget while leaving companies with administrative requirements, including tax declarations, payments, guarantees and post-clearance inspections. Prices retreated after a small rally, holding above the 5/10/20/40-period moving averages, with the 60-day moving average forming resistance above. As of October 22, SMM statistics show that the social inventory of aluminium ingots across the three regions in China stands at the 430,000 tonnes level, continuing to decline from the previous trading day, marking eight consecutive working days of destocking. As of October 20, SMM statistics show domestic aluminium ingot social inventory across the three regions stood at the 450,000-million-tonne level, down further from the previous trading day, marking six consecutive working days of destocking. By region, all three regions saw destocking, with Guangdong and Wuxi posting relatively notable declines, while Gongyi edged down, and the scope of destocking expanded from the prior period. According to SMM statistics, changes in aluminium ingot and aluminium billet (collectively referred to as aluminium inventory) inventories at major consumption areas in China around the National Day holiday from 2020 to 2026: overall destocking before the holiday, the most concentrated inventory buildup during the holiday, and a pullback after the holiday.
