Vedanta Aluminium is equipping its specialised aluminium portfolio to meet rising demand from India’s power transmission sector as the country expands its grid to accommodate growing renewable energy capacity.

Vedanta expects the transmission buildout to require application-specific aluminium grades with varying combinations of strength, conductivity and corrosion resistance, depending on terrain and operating conditions.

According to ICRA’s June 2026 assessment cited by Vedanta Aluminium, India could see INR 5–6 trillion (USD 52–63 billion) in transmission investments between FY2027 and FY2032. This is part of the National Electricity Plan (2023–2032), which foresees over INR 9.15 trillion (USD 96.53 billion) in transmission expenditure.

The planned investment could take India’s transmission line length to around 627,000 circuit kilometres and substation capacity to approximately 2,171 GVA by March 2030. Meanwhile, the Central Electricity Authority is targeting nearly 900 GW of non-fossil capacity by FY2036, increasing the need for high-voltage corridors bridging renewable energy-rich regions with demand centres.

Grid expansion renews specialised aluminium demand

Aluminium is already widely used in overhead transmission lines and as wire rod for conductors and cables, supported by its lower weight than copper, conductivity and suitability for long-span applications.

The need for additional transmission capacity is becoming more pressing as renewable generation expands. ICRA estimates that around 54.8 GW of commissioned renewable capacity remained on temporary grid access as of May 22, 2026, while renewable generators in northern and western India faced curtailment owing to transmission constraints.

The expanding network would also cover diverse areas, from river crossings and coastal areas to hilly terrain and long renewable power evacuation corridors. This is expected to strengthen demand for aluminium grades designed for specific conditions.

Vedanta Aluminium, with an installed production capacity of around 2.4 million tonnes, has expanded its downstream portfolio accordingly. Its offerings include 6201 alloy for high-strength, low-sag applications such as river crossings and difficult terrain, AL59 for corrosion-resistant applications in coastal and industrial environments, and 1350 and 1370 grades for high-conductivity uses, including standard conductors, transformer windings and substation busbars.

The company is also among the world’s largest aluminium wire rod producers, supplying material used across conductors, transformers and substations.

Substations add another layer of aluminium demand

The expansion of India’s substation network is expected to further support aluminium consumption. ICRA estimates that the country could add around 100 GVA of substation capacity annually through March 2030, compared with approximately 90 GVA in recent years.

Transformers and busbars also require high-conductivity aluminium rod, adding to demand from the wider transmission ecosystem.

The longer-term outlook indicates an even broader increase in aluminium use by the electrical sector. According to the Ministry of Mines’ aluminium vision document cited by Vedanta Aluminium, electrical-sector aluminium consumption is projected to rise from around 2.4 million tonnes in FY2024 to 4 million tonnes by FY2030 and 12.9 million tonnes by FY2047.

The projected growth throws light on the expanding role of aluminium in India’s power transmission infrastructure and renewable energy integration, alongside its established applications in construction and automobiles.
