EDITED BY : HEENA IQBAL 1MINS READ

The Malaysian government has prolonged the period of moratorium on bauxite mining in Pahang till the 14th General Election (GE14), which was set to expire at the end of this month. Menteri Besar of Pahang, Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob said they leave the matter to the federal government to make the final decision.

Adnan Yaakob said, “The ruling government has to make the decision. Our mandate is up to the next general election, after which it depends on the government of the day. We have to wait until the general election.”

"I am in favour of federal government's assistance to resolve this problem, but it does not mean that I am washing my hands off this.

“We agreed to the extension of the moratorium but the state government will leave it to the federal government to make the final decision,” he added.

In March, Minister Datuk Seri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar announced that the moratorium had been extended to June 30, looking to clear remaining bauxite stockpiles

The government first banned the bauxite mining on January 15, 2016 after the residents protested over contamination of water due to unregulated bauxite mining.
