Secondary aluminium recovery in the U.S. up 7.0% in 2016

According to the recent aluminum recycling statistics by the U.S. Geological Survey and Department of Interior published by the Aluminum Association, the U.S. aluminium industry purchased an estimated 370500 tons of aluminium scrap during December 2016, which registers a 9.0 per cent increase over the December 2015 total of 340000 tons.

USGS estimates that U.S. aluminium industry recovered 317000 tons of aluminium and aluminium alloys in December 2016, an increase of 10.1 per cent YOY. According to the preliminary data for 2016 full year, recovery of aluminium from scrap totalled an estimated 3.9 million tons, up 7.0 per cent over the 2015 total of 3.7 million tons.

U.S. exports of scrap which accounts for about 50 per cent of total export and is not included in the government’s consumption statistics stood at 1.4 million tons in 2016 which indicates a drop of 13.1 per cent from 2015.
