Bauxite third party shipments increased year-on-year by 6 per cent to 10.091 million tonnes in Q3 2021 but remained essentially unchanged than the previous quarter. In nine months, Rio’s bauxite shipments totalled 28.608 million tonnes, down by 5 per cent from the same period last year.

Rio Tinto Chief Executive Jakob Stausholm, said: “The third quarter has demonstrated the resilience of our people in dealing with ongoing COVID-19 challenges. It has been another difficult quarter operationally and despite improving versus the prior quarter, we recognise the opportunity to raise our performance. We have consequently modestly adjusted our guidance.”

Alumina production stood at 1.937 million tonnes in Q3 2021, reflection a 1 per cent dip from Q3 2020 and 4 per cent drop from Q2 2021. Total production in nine months amounted to 5.983 million tonnes, essentially the same compared to the same period last year.

At the Queensland alumina refinery, Rio Tinto churned out 738,000 tonnes compared to 756,000 tonnes in the previous quarter. At Yawrun refinery, the company produced 770,000 tonnes in comparison with 782,000 tonnes in Q2 2021.

Outlook for the Indian Aluminium Industry

On August 24, Rio Tinto announced a partnership with Sumitomo Corporation to study the construction of a hydrogen pilot plant at our Yarwun alumina refinery in Gladstone, Queensland, and explore the potential use of hydrogen at the refinery.

Rio Tinto’s aluminium production in the third quarter of 2021 came in at 774,000 tonnes, 5 per cent down quarter-on-quarter and 3 per cent down on the year. In nine months, the company’s aluminium production totalled 2.393 million tonnes, up by 1 per cent from a year ago.
