MINING giant Rio Tinto Alcan is assessing sites for a recruitment and training centre in Cairns for its $1 billion-plus Weipa bauxite expansion project.
Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa operations general manager Jo-Anne Scarini said the company wanted Cairns to share in the economic benefits the project would generate.
Ms Scarini is expected to tell a Cairns Chamber of Commerce business breakfast this morning that the South of Embley project would need at least 300 people to build its first stage and the centre would ensure they were fully equipped to undertake the work safely and effectively.
