Specialised in plasma-based technology for heavy industry and defence, PyroGenesis has completed manufacturing a plasma torch system for Constellium. A significant step toward aluminium furnace electrification, the system will be installed in the company’s casthouse remelting furnace to replace conventional heating with cleaner, sustainable methods.

Plasma-based electrification is considered a cleaner and scalable alternative to fuel sources, promoting the industry’s decarbonisation and sustainability goals. The system components of the technology are currently being delivered to a European facility of Constellium, to continue over the next five weeks. PyroGenesis will instate an engineering team on-site to receive the shipments and begin installation. Operations are expected to start by Q2 2026.
The project commenced with an industrial implementation contract signed in August 2025 between the two companies for the supply of plasma torch technology and related peripheral components for an aluminium remelting furnace. The project builds on an earlier collaboration agreement under which Constellium expressed the objective of exploring the use of PyroGenesis plasma torches as a potential alternative to traditional heating sources in its aluminium cast houses.
At present, the initiative is part of Constellium’s R&D efforts, and is conducted at a demonstrator scale to evaluate the replacement of natural gas burners in aluminium production.
President and CEO of PyroGenesis, Mr P. Peter Pascali, stated, “The transition toward electrified industrial processes must be grounded in both performance and economic viability,” a balance that PyroGenesis aspires to achieve with its plasma torch technology.
Commending Constellium for the initiative, Pascali added, “By proactively pursuing cleaner and more efficient energy solutions, Constellium is setting the tone for the industry. Together, we are advancing the electrification of an energy-demanding area of aluminium manufacturing.”
