National Aluminium Company Limited (NALCO), a Navratna CPSE under the Ministry of Mines, Government of India, has broadened its product portfolio with the launch of its latest innovation, the IA90 Grade Aluminium Alloy Ingot. This strategic introduction is designed to meet the increasing and evolving demands of the automotive industry.
The IA90 alloy was officially unveiled by NALCO's Director (Commercial), Sadashiv Samantaray, at the Smelter and Power Complex in Angul, in the presence of senior officials and technical experts. The mentioned alloy, known for its high strength, wear resistance, and corrosion resistance, is also suitable for use in electric vehicles (EVs), particularly in structural components and parts such as wheels.
The automotive industry has emerged as a significant consumer of aluminium due to its lightweight properties. The ongoing shift towards electric vehicles will increase the demand for aluminium in lightweight EVs. In 2024, India's electric vehicle (EV) sales surpassed the 2 million mark, accounting for 7.7 per cent of total automobile sales for the year, marking a significant milestone for the country's growing EV industry.
Developed explicitly for critical automotive applications, the IA90 aluminium alloy delivers high strength, excellent wear resistance, and superior corrosion protection. Its outstanding castability and mechanical performance make it an ideal choice for manufacturing essential automotive components such as wheels, engine blocks, cylinder heads, and structural parts.
With the launch of IA90, NALCO reinforces its dedication to innovation and market responsiveness. The company aims to expand its presence in the domestic aluminium sector by providing high-performance, application-focused solutions that meet the growing demand for advanced materials in the automotive industry.
