In less than a year, the central government of India has yet again introduced an amendment to the quality control regulations for aluminium and aluminium alloy products, set to take effect on October 1, 2025.
Under the new directive, several aluminium products will be subjected to updated quality checks. These include aluminium alloy tubes used for irrigation (such as welded tubes), EC grade aluminium rods made through continuous casting and rolling, and wrought aluminium and aluminium alloy bars, rods, and sections, among others.
However, exemptions have been made for imported products used in research and development. Additionally, small enterprises are allowed to import products that do not comply with the new Quality Control Order (QCO) until January 1, 2026, while micro enterprises can do so until April 1, 2026.
Previously, in June last year, the government had issued the ‘Aluminium and Aluminium Alloy Products (Quality Control) Amendment Order, 2024’, which came into force on September 26, of the same year. That amendment required all aluminium and aluminium alloy products to conform to Indian Standard IS 5484:1997, carry the 'Standard Mark,' and obtain a license under Scheme-1 as detailed in Schedule-II of the Bureau of Indian Standards (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018.
It is worth noting that while the 2024 amendment exempted domestically manufactured products intended for export from compliance, the current amendment provides exemptions for certain imported goods instead.
