On Wednesday, September 10, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla highlighted the significant role of aluminium, in global manufacturing and green transition. Speaking at Alumex India 2025, an exclusive event for aluminium extrusion and its allied industries, Birla described aluminium as a versatile metal, vital for both industrial growth and sustainable development.
“Alumex India 2025 has been organised to present India’s aluminium industry, MSMEs, and their innovations before the world,” he said, underpinning its use in sectors from consumer goods to aircraft and electric vehicles and noting its recyclability as a critical advantage for green transitions.
Birla acknowledged that India is witnessing opportunities across industry, services, and technology, where aluminium has an important role to play. He also accepted that the country’s MSMEs need more access to new technology, research, and innovation if they are to scale globally. Calling aluminium a "strategic metal" for Make in India and Aatmanirbhar Bharat, he called on stakeholders to enhance exports and competitiveness.
Global trends and India’s position
The global aluminium market is projected to touch USD 281.8 billion by 2030, growing at a CAGR of 4.8 per cent, led by automotive, construction, and packaging. Amid the worldwide growth, India is poised to attain a market worth USD 21.5 billion by 2030. India is the world’s second-largest aluminium producer, with an annual production of 4 million tonnes, supporting more than 4,000 SMEs and nearly 800,000 jobs.
