GM invests $40m in US aluminium casting operations for truck, SUV transmissions

General Motors is investing more than USD 40 million in its Bedford Casting Operations in Indiana, expanding aluminium casting capacity to support production of 10-speed transmissions for full-size trucks and SUVs.
The investment will also increase capacity for existing 8-speed transmissions and support engine block production, with work beginning immediately and regular production expected to start in 2027.
The project adds to GM's broader investment in US manufacturing and reinforces the role of Bedford's aluminium casting operations in the company's propulsion supply chain.
Aluminium casting capacity expands
Bedford Casting Operations specialises in aluminium die casting, producing transmission cases, cylinder blocks, structural components and housings for electric vehicle drive units.
The latest investment will give the facility additional capacity for transmission-related castings as GM prepares to support production of full-size trucks and SUVs.
Elisha Huddleston, plant director at Bedford Casting Operations, said the investment reflects the capabilities of the plant's workforce and will support GM's truck and SUV programmes while strengthening job security at the facility.
“We are proud that GM is investing in Bedford Casting Operations and in the talented team members who have built our plant's reputation for safety, quality, and craftsmanship,” Huddleston said.
“This opportunity allows us to continue supporting GM's full-size trucks and SUVs while providing even greater job security for our team members and continued support for the Bedford community”, he added.
Bedford remains part of GM's US casting network
The latest project builds on GM's longer-term investment in Bedford. In 2021, the automaker announced more than USD 51 million for new equipment at the Indiana facility to support aluminium drive-unit castings for the Chevrolet Silverado EV and other applications.
GM's current Bedford operations include aluminium castings for transmission cases, cylinder blocks, structural components and EV drive-unit housings, making the plant a key part of the company's domestic metal-processing network.
The company has also been expanding casting and transmission capacity elsewhere in its US manufacturing footprint. In April, GM announced a combined USD 830 million investment across its Romulus, Toledo and Saginaw facilities, including additional 10-speed transmission capacity at Romulus and Toledo and higher engine casting volumes at Saginaw.
At Bedford, the new work is scheduled to begin immediately, with regular production expected in 2027.
GM said the investment is part of its wider commitment to US manufacturing. The company expects to spend approximately USD 9 billion across its US manufacturing footprint in 2026, alongside more than USD 7 billion on US research and development.
“This announcement reflects the quality, craftsmanship, and performance our team delivers every day,” Huddleston said. “It also shows what we can accomplish through collaboration and strong relationships.”
The expansion keeps aluminium casting at the centre of Bedford's role in GM's vehicle production network, while adding capacity for the transmissions and engine components required by the automaker's full-size truck and SUV programmes.
