Henan province, China’s key aluminium production hub, has reportedly planned to cap its 2020 aluminium smelting capacity at 2.5 million tonnes per annum while shifting its focus on producing high-value aluminium products, reported the provincial government on Wednesday, June 26.

The provincial government on its website explicitly mentioned that the province located in Central China is estimated to ramp up its aluminium products capacity to over 12 million tonnes per annum by 2020, in line with the mainland’s supply-side reforms and industry restructuring to focus more on value-added products.
At present, Henan’s annual alumina producingcapacity is at 12 million tonnes, while aluminium and aluminium products 3.16 million tonnes and 10 million tonnes or more, according to data shared by the Henan Provincial Nonferrous Metals Guild.
According to National Bureau of Statistics, Henan surpassed Shandong as China’s No. 1 aluminium product maker since 2017 and ranked No. 3 in alumina output in 2018 by producing 11.63 million tonnes.
With the intention to refocus on the production of more value-added products for the transport, military, and electronics sectors, the province is aiming to build two or three new aluminium industry complexes in the cities of Luoyang and Zhengzhou. The complexes will have five aluminium producers with the ability to produce aluminium processed products.
Further, it is aiming to build a new recycled aluminium production with a capacity to produce 1 million tonnes per annum in Changge city, and aluminium scrap collection centres in Luoyang, Gongyi, and Changge, according to the government.
In the meanwhile, Henan is urging its existing aluminium processed sector to relocate to the new aluminium industry complexes.
