According to China Customs data released on Monday, January 14, China’s aluminium exports in 2018 increased by 20.9 per cent from a year earlier to a record high. United States sanctions on Russian producer Rusal drove the demand for Chinese metal which as a result, spurred the aluminium exports by China.

{alcircleadd}China, the world’s top aluminium producer in 2018 recorded a total export of 5.8 million tonnes of unwrought aluminium and aluminium products, compared to approximately 4.79 million tonnes in 2017, said the General Administration of Customs. In the whole of 2016, China’s aluminium exports were at approximately 4.6 million tonnes. Thus, the year 2017 also saw a year-on-year rise by around 4.5 per cent.

The export increased year-on-year despite a 10 per cent tariff on aluminium imports into the United States since March. Separate US duties on Chinese aluminium products such as foil and alloy sheet also failed to dent the exports.
However, China’s aluminium exports in December 2018 dropped 0.6 per cent month-on-month from approximately 530,162 tonnes in November to 527,000 tonnes as the price arbitrage to international markets narrowed, the customs data showed. But from December 2017, aluminium exports by China last month rose 19.8 per cent year-on-year. This represents the export volume in December 2017 at 440,000 tonnes.

November was the first month that exports of semi-fabricated aluminium from China could receive a higher 16 percent value-added tax rebate, encouraging shipments.
