According to a report on Thursday, December 22, Brazil has decided to impose countervailing duties on China’s aluminium sheet products, effective from March 31, 2023. The news came after China’s Ministry of Commerce announced it officially.
The Ministry has also reported the duties will range between 14.88 per cent and 14.93 per cent, and will be implemented for the next five years.
In 2021, China’s aluminium exports to Brazil were worth $461.43 million. In 2019, Brazil’s import of aluminium sheets, in particular, from China was 56.6 per cent of the total imports.
Brazil will levy duties on aluminium imports from China in light of the evidence of damages to the country’s domestic industry caused by Chinese dumping.
Two years ago, Brazil’s Ministry of Economy considered imposing Chinese aluminium imports, as documents presented by the Brazilian Aluminium Association to the Foreign Trade Secretariat of the Ministry of Economy indicated Chinese aluminium laminates exports to Brazil were valued lower than the latter’s own domestic market.
