Bauxite shipment on hold
A TOTAL of 40,000 tonnes of bauxite has been mined so far this year.

However, XINFA Aurum Exploration Fiji has stockpiled the bauxite as engineers work at completing the Navakasiga Jetty.

This was made known to a group of journalists, who visited Nawailevu Bauxite mine yesterday.

The group was on a tour of government project sites in the north.

Divisional planning officer northern Alipate Bolalevu said the first shipment was expected to take place later this year.

He said the recent bad weather experienced in parts of Vanua Levu resulted in the delay of construction work at the jetty.

"The shipment is halted because we are still waiting for the completion of the jetty," Mr Bolalevu said.

"We expect to complete it (jetty) sometimes soon.

"We already have two barges on stand-by to ship the bauxite across to China and it is expected to load 60,000 tonnes on one trip," he said.

"We are aiming to export a total of one million tonnes of bauxite this year," he added.
