Metro Mining’s concern over Rio Tinto’s Aurukun plans brings 3.1Bt bauxite in focus
Metro Mining has raised concerns over Rio Tinto’s proposed acquisition of the Aurukun bauxite project in Cape York, warning that the leases could remain undeveloped under the mining giant’s ownership. Metro Mining Managing Director Simon Wensley mentioned that Rio Tinto already controls a 3.1 billion-tonne bauxite resource on Cape York, enough to suffice for around 75 years of production at current levels. Rio Tinto’s Bell Bay aluminium smelter secures five-year extension with $200m support
Rio Tinto’s Bell Bay aluminium smelter in Tasmania has secured a five-year extension, with federal and state governments providing a USD 200 million support package to keep the facility operating until the end of 2031. The agreement ends months of uncertainty over the smelter’s future, with its existing electricity supply agreement with Hydro Tasmania due to expire on December 31. Under the new arrangement, Hydro Tasmania will continue supplying power to Bell Bay through 2031, while government support will help maintain the smelter’s competitiveness. Alcoa Corporation is acquiring South32’s key aluminium assets in a USD 3.1 billion deal in cash plus 17,008,960 Alcoa shares, expanding its upstream aluminium portfolio across Australia, Brazil and South Africa. The transaction will also give South32 and its shareholders an equity interest in the enlarged Alcoa business, while backing South32’s broader shift towards copper and other base metals. New Zealand’s aluminium extrusion industry is calling for urgent government action as it faces growing pressure from low-priced imports. The Aluminium Extruders Association of NZ (ALENZ) says a rise in imported aluminium extrusions, particularly from China, is affecting local manufacturers, with some products entering the market at prices below the cost of the raw aluminium billet used by domestic producers.
