Following his tour of the two power plants in Maputo on 5th April 2022, President Mnangagwa explained to the public that Zimbabwe has been importing power since it achieved independence in 1980, but lacked in prioritising the infrastructure and energy, which deprived adding value addition.

Zimbabwe a minerals rich nation is known as the African treasury for gas, which was found in Muzarabani, platinum in Mhondoro Ngezi, coal in Hwange and water in Kariba Dam and the Zambezi River, all of that can be utilized for the generation of power locally reducing the energy import bill.

The President’s tour at the Maputo Thermal Power plant marks the practice of National Development Strategy 1, which encourages growing the economy on the shoulders of the private sector.

He also went on a tour of Midal Cables Group of Companies, the largest manufacturer of aluminium rods in Maputo.

Midal cables essentially deal in the manufacturing and sale of aluminium rods for electrical and mechanical uses, aluminium wire and bare overhead conductors for power transmission and even distribution.

Midal Mozambique had started their manufacturing journey in late 2014 with a commercial product launch in 2015. It has recorded steady growth in both production output and sales volume since then.

The President said, “I am happy with what I have seen and learnt here. We in Zimbabwe benefit from this plant daily. There is a serious deficit of power in the region. I hope this plant will expand the generation of power to the benefit of other countries including Zimbabwe.”

“I am proud that this plant is managed by our young men and women. The future of our world demands that we teach our children the use of technology in higher learning institutions and to use our local resources to grow our economies.”

Dr, Sydney Gata, the Executive Chairman of Zesa Holdings Executive Chairman, renounced the destruction and theft of copper wires is driving Zesa to shift towards the use of aluminium rather than copper to reduce the production cost.

LeaderSpeak 2022

“Zimbabwe has lost billions of dollars through vandalism and theft of Zesa copper cables. This has derailed the development of the power generation sector. “

“Alternatively, the use of aluminium will be less expensive than copper. This makes it more desirable to use especially in large projects requiring extensive wiring and which span long distances. The cost of copper in these types of installations can easily outweigh the cost of using aluminium.” Dr Gata added.
