Vedanta Aluminium cuts 50% CO₂ at Kodingamali bauxite mines with EV loader shift

India's largest aluminium producer, Vedanta Aluminium, unlocked a new milestone concerning its decarbonisation efforts at the Kodingamali bauxite mines. This has been achieved by introducing electric vehicle (EV) loaders, aiding in cutting CO₂ emissions from loading operations by 50 per cent. Currently, the firm is actively shifting nearly half of its loading fleets to electric from diesel, which embeds the initiative high towards its journey for achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

The operations at the Singaram Siding mainly relied on six diesel loaders. After the introduction of the 3:3diesel-to-EV setup, the firm is cutting down carbon emissions by almost 120 kg per hour. This strategy contributes directly to cleaner and more efficient mining practices in the region. Additionally, this shift from diesel to electric brings immediate environmental benefits like less air and noise pollution, better energy efficiency and a reduced dependence on fossil fuels.

This is deemed to be a part of the firm's larger goal to create a fully electric fleet throughout its operations. Moreover, it has already boasted the largest fleet of lithium-ion battery-powered electric forklifts in India, operating across Odisha and Chhattisgarh. Besides this, the firm is also actively pushing forward its decarbonisation efforts, which aim to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 or before that.

Celebrating the successful shift, Pranab Kumar Bhattacharyya, the CEO of Vedanta Alumina Business, stated, “At Vedanta Aluminium, we view  Electric Vehicles as a sustainable and renewable source of energy that powers both our operations and our planet’s future. Our investment in EV loaders at Kodingamali demonstrates how clean technology delivers immediate emission cuts while building long-term resilience. This milestone strengthens our net-zero journey and proves sustainable innovation drives mining excellence without compromise.”

This shift does not aid in cutting down on emissions and saving on maintenance costs compared to diesel machines, but also produces almost zero tailpipe emissions. Reducing nearly 120 kg of CO₂ per hour adds up to thousands of tonnes saved each year, setting a new standard for eco-friendly mining practices. On top of that, the operation with lesser noise protects the environment in delicate and remote mining locations.

As of now, the firm is actively working towards its vision of sustainable mining and achieving positive outcomes in reality. ‘Transforming for Good', the firm's philosophy, makes it more agile towards creating lasting value for communities, protecting the environment, and enhancing India’s industrial landscape and sets new standards for responsible growth.
