Being one of the world’s top aluminiumproducing countries, the United Arab Emirates’ import of alumina is expected to rise in 2019 after a year-on-year drop till last year. According to our third-party data, the UAE in 2016 had imported 1.67 million tonnes and from then on the volume dropped year-on-year till 2018. In 2017, the country’s alumina import had stood at 1.36 million tonnes, down 18.5 per cent from 2016. The phenomenon continued in the year 2018 as well, as the UAE imported 1.12 million tonnes, down 33 per cent from 2016 and 18 per cent from 2017. But this year, the country is expected to import a higher volume of alumina at 1.33 million tonnes, up 19 per cent from the previous year.

According to the available data, India is estimated to be the top key supplier of alumina to the UAE in 2019. From 725,503 tonnes in 2018, the UAE’s alumina import from India is likely to increase to 844,131 tonnes, up 16.35 per cent. In 2017, the country had imported 704,150 tonnes after rising 62 per cent from 434,162 tonnes in 2016. This indicates that the UAE’s alumina import from India has been rising year-on-year since 2016.
The United Arab Emirates imports this significant amount of alumina to feed its domestic smelters. Emirates Global Aluminium, popularly known as EGA is one of the leading UAE-based aluminium smelters. It smelts about 1 tonne in every 25 tonnes of aluminium produced worldwide, taking the UAE from no aluminium production to the fifth largest aluminium producing nation in the world.
