TaeguTec has expanded its T-Turn turning insert programme with the introduction of the TTA101 grade, a new tantalum carbide (Ta-C)-coated insert designed to improve tool life, cutting-edge sharpness and surface finish in high-speed aluminium and non-ferrous machining applications.
The TTA101 grade is designed for recommended cutting speeds of up to 1,500 m/min when machining wrought aluminium alloys. Its coating technology aims to improve wear resistance while preserving the sharp cutting edge required for consistent surface quality at high cutting speeds.
Ultra-thin Ta-C coating preserves cutting-edge sharpness
A key feature of the TTA101 grade is its Ta-C coating, which combines exceptional hardness with a very low coefficient of friction. With a thickness of less than 0.5 μm, the coating is designed to retain the insert’s underlying cutting-edge geometry and avoid the edge rounding that can occur with thicker coatings.
The grade has a hardness rating of HV 5000 or higher, providing wear resistance for demanding machining conditions. Its resistance to high-temperature oxidation is also intended to help maintain coating integrity during sustained high-speed cutting.
According to TaeguTec, these properties support smooth, consistent chip evacuation and an excellent surface finish on non-ferrous workpiece materials.

TTA101 extends TaeguTec’s FL chipbreaker range
The new grade joins TaeguTec’s existing T-Turn turning insert range featuring the FL chipbreaker, developed for aluminium machining. Its high positive rake geometry and sharp cutting edge are designed to minimise built-up edge formation during cutting.
By introducing the TTA101 coating to this established tooling programme, TaeguTec aims to address the wear and surface-finish requirements of high-productivity aluminium turning applications while retaining the cutting geometry associated with the FL chipbreaker.
Multiple insert geometries available
TaeguTec is offering the TTA101 grade across several insert geometries within its T-Turn line: CCGT, DCGT, TCGT, VCGT and RCGT. The range covers rhombic, triangular and round insert types, all featuring positive 7° clearance.
The grade’s recommended cutting speed of up to 1,500 m/min on wrought aluminium alloys positions it for high-speed machining applications where cutting-edge sharpness, wear resistance and surface finish are key considerations.
