US-based Strategic Bauxite Inc. is preparing to expand its refractory-grade bauxite operations in Guyana after acquiring Guyana-based First Bauxite LLC in July.
The company’s plans were discussed during a recent meeting between US Ambassador to Guyana Nicole Theriot and Strategic Bauxite executives. The proposed investment is expected to expand mining and processing capacity in the country while strengthening the supply of refractory-grade bauxite.
The expansion is backed by USD 85.5 million in US government equity funding through the Industrial Base Analysis and Sustainment (IBAS) programme, alongside USD 64.5 million in private-sector co-investment.
Guyana mine and calcination capacity to expand
According to the US Embassy, the combined USD 150 million investment will support an expansion of the bauxite mine and construction of new calcination facilities in Guyana.
A subsequent brown-fused alumina facility is also planned in the United States, extending the project’s supply chain beyond Guyana.

Refractory-grade bauxite is a specialized mineral used in high-temperature industrial applications. The planned expansion is therefore expected to strengthen supply of the material for industrial uses.
Following the meeting, Ambassador Theriot said it was encouraging to learn more about Strategic Bauxite’s plans and the opportunities the investment could create in Guyana.
Strategic Bauxite’s leadership also reaffirmed its commitment to occupational safety, environmental performance, and regulatory compliance. The company said it would continue engaging with communities affected by its operations.
US-Guyana critical minerals cooperation
The investment forms part of broader US-Guyana economic cooperation, particularly around critical mineral supply chains and industrial development.
The United States has said it welcomes partnerships aimed at strengthening critical supply chains while supporting responsible investment and sustainable economic opportunities in Guyana.
With the planned mine expansion, new calcination capacity, and a downstream brown-fused alumina facility in the United States, Strategic Bauxite is positioning the project as part of a wider cross-border refractory materials supply chain.
