18 Jamaican students return from Russia with engineering degrees, ready for mining careers

Eighteen Jamaican students have returned home after completing engineering degrees in Russia, bringing new technical skills back to the country’s bauxite and mining sector.

The students completed their engineering programmes at Siberian Federal University in Krasnoyarsk, Russia, under a fully funded international scholarship programme backed by UC RUSAL Alumina Jamaica Ltd./WINDALCO.

The latest cohort was awarded the scholarships in November 2021. After completing their studies, the graduates returned to Jamaica in August and have since taken up roles with the bauxite and mining company.

The new engineers are now working across a range of technical disciplines, including process, instrument, mechanical, electrical, environmental and quality engineering.

That spread of expertise is particularly relevant to an industry where engineering skills sit at the heart of everything from production and equipment performance to environmental management and quality control.

For the students, the programme also offered more than a route to a degree. According to environment engineer Jessica Lake, the experience provided exposure to advanced facilities, research and demanding academic training, who added, “This sponsorship provided far more than financial relief; it opened doors to advanced facilities, cutting-edge research, and an environment that challenged us daily. It allowed me to train under exceptional academic standards, teaching me not only technical system analytics, but how to think like true engineers.”

Lake said the graduates were grateful for the opportunity and thanked WINDALCO for investing in their education and helping them prepare for their future.

WINDALCO has invested more than JMD 75 million in its international scholarship programme over the period.

The initiative has now supported 48 Jamaican students pursuing studies in Russia. The scholarship package covers tuition, visas and airfare, along with a monthly stipend, winter clothing allowance, internships and medical insurance.

The programme therefore goes beyond simply funding university education. It combines academic training with practical exposure and support throughout the students’ time overseas.
