Mexico and Argentina are moving in different directions on aluminium imports from China. Mexico has imposed a new anti-dumping duty on aluminium bars, rods and profiles, while Argentina has dropped its existing anti-dumping order on certain aluminium tubes. Mexico has issued an anti-dumping duty order covering Chinese mainland aluminium bars, rods and profiles classified under HTSMX 7604.10.02, 7604.10.99, 7604.29.01, 7604.29.02 and 7604.29.99. Imports of the subject products will face an anti-dumping duty of USD 1.58 per kg for the next five years. The US Department of War has committed USD 750 million to back rare earth supplies from Brazil’s Serra Verde, as Washington moves to build a more secure, China-independent supply chain for critical minerals used in defence, energy, aerospace and advanced manufacturing. Norsk Hydro's Alunorte production cut lifts aluminium shares in Asia
Chinese and Japanese aluminium stocks gained on Wednesday after Norsk Hydro announced that its Alunorte alumina refinery in Brazil had reduced production to 50 per cent of capacity because of disruptions to its natural gas supply. Brazil’s aluminium scrap exports to China surge 590% since 2022, squeezing domestic supply
Brazil's aluminium industry is facing a growing shortage of scrap as exports to Asia, particularly China, continue to increase, raising concerns over domestic recycling, decarbonisation and future competitiveness. Aluminium recycling plays a key role in reducing emissions, with recycled aluminium requiring up to 95 per cent less energy than primary production. However, Brazilian producers say increasing exports of aluminium scrap are making it more difficult to secure raw materials for domestic recycling.
