
In South America, alumina production in January 2021 stood at 1.069 million tonnes, reflecting a month-on-month downfall of 3.17 per cent, according to the data shown by the International Aluminium Institute. In December 2020, South America produced 1.104 million tonnes of alumina – an increase of 12.65 per cent from 980,000 tonnes in November.

On a year-on-year calculation, South America’s alumina output stood 2.10 per cent higher than 1.047 million tonnes.
In the entire year of 2020, alumina production in South America totalled 11.780 million tonnes, up by 9.69 per cent from 10.739 million tonnes produced during the same period of the previous year.
In North America, on the other hand, alumina production grew month-on-month by 3,000 tonnes or 1.31 per cent to 232,000 tonnes in January 2021. In December 2020, production stood at 229,000 tonnes, registering an increase of 2,000 tonnes or 0.88 per cent from 227,000 tonnes in November.
On a year-on-year basis, North America’s alumina output in January 2021 recorded a dip of 1,000 tonnes or 0.43 per cent from 233,000 tonnes.
Alumina production in North America in the entire year of 2020 amounted to 2.671 million tonnes, down by 8.9 per cent from 2.932 million tonnes in 2019.
