Bauxite mines in Shanxi are still operating normally despite increased safety inspections launched after a gas explosion at a coal mine in Qinyuan County.

Authorities in Shanxi recently started a special safety inspection campaign focused mainly on coal mines following the accident. So far, bauxite mines in the province have not received any official notice asking them to stop production.

Most of the larger bauxite mines in the region belong to companies such as Aluminum Corporation of China and State Power Investment Corporation, which already have relatively established safety and environmental systems in place.

Even though production is continuing, companies have reportedly started internal safety checks and inspections as a precaution.

At this stage, the government’s investigation campaign remains focused on coal operations linked to the accident and nearby mines. It has not yet expanded into the non-coal mining sector, including bauxite.

The Qinyuan region itself has annual bauxite production capacity estimated at around 1.3 million to 1.5 million tonnes.

Mining activity in the area is mainly tied to captive mines operated by Chalco, while some private mines supply companies like Senze and Xinfa for their own industrial use.

While the direct impact on supply remains limited for now, any policy changes are being closely watched. There are concerns that if safety inspections expand to non-coal mines, authorities could introduce a halt to production altogether, which would tighten domestic bauxite supply.

At the same time, Guinea’s recent export restrictions and higher sea freight expenses are already adding pressure to the market. These developments are creating more concerns around the bauxite supply chain and are providing stronger support to alumina prices.

Possible supply disruptions have also contributed to alumina futures prices moving higher in recent sessions.
