Rio Tinto adds Aurukun's 8 tpa bauxite opportunity to growing Cape York pipeline

The acquisition gives Rio Tinto control of a major undeveloped Cape York resource as it expands its existing Weipa operations and advances new mining areas.

Rio Tinto is expanding its Cape York bauxite portfolio by acquiring the Aurukun bauxite project from Glencore and Mitsubishi, adding a potential source of up to 8 million dry tonnes of export bauxite per year to its regional pipeline.

The transaction, for an undisclosed price, gives Rio control of the greenfields project located about 23 kilometres north-east of Aurukun and 35 kilometres south of Weipa. The deal remains subject to Queensland Government and other regulatory approvals.

Under the development plans previously advanced by Glencore and Mitsubishi, Aurukun could produce up to 15 million tonnes per year of run-of-mine bauxite, equivalent to as much as 8 million dry tonnes per year of product for export.

For Rio, the acquisition adds another development option to a region where it already operates major bauxite mines and is pursuing further production opportunities.

Aurukun adds to Rio's Cape York pipeline

Rio currently draws bauxite from its Andoom and Amrun operations after ending production at East Weipa in 2024. The company is also advancing the Kangwinan project, which is intended to almost double bauxite production from its Weipa Southern operations, where Amrun is located.

Alongside this, Rio approved about AUD 277 million (USD 199.7 million) and began work on the Norman Creek access project last year, opening the way for mining in the Norman Creek region of Amrun. Aurukun therefore adds another potential source of future supply to an existing regional production and development pipeline.

The project is covered by a mineral development licence, although a mining lease has yet to be granted. Rio said it would assess the appropriate regulatory approvals pathway if the acquisition proceeds and consult with Queensland and Commonwealth agencies as well as Traditional Owners during future planning and development.

Glencore hands over long-developed resource

Glencore said the joint venture considered several options following recent progress on regulatory approvals and updated project designs and cost estimates. It concluded that bringing Rio Tinto in as owner offered the best opportunity to develop the resource, given Rio's existing bauxite operations in the region.

The project has already undergone environmental assessment. An environmental impact statement assessment report released last year estimated a net benefit of about AUD 482 million (USD 347.5 million) to Queensland and projected 350–406 jobs during mine operations.

For Rio, the acquisition provides access to that resource while allowing it to assess the project's development within its broader Cape York operating footprint.

Development remains subject to approvals

Aurukun is not yet a producing mine, and the acquisition does not immediately add bauxite output to Rio's production. Further regulatory approvals, stakeholder consultations and agreements will be required before development can proceed.

The transaction nevertheless strengthens Rio's position across one of Australia's established bauxite regions, adding an undeveloped project with potential export capacity alongside the company's existing mines and planned expansions.

With Andoom and Amrun supplying current production and Kangwinan and Norman Creek supporting future growth, Aurukun gives Rio another potential route to expand its Cape York bauxite business.
