Rusal could reopen Friguia in exchange for bauxite

United Co Rusal could restart the Friguia alumina refinery in Guinea if the government grants it further bauxite concessions, first deputy ceo Vladislav Soloviev told Metal Bulletin.
“Among our working refineries, Friguia is the most expensive in terms of production costs. We incurred losses in the second quarter because of the Friguia one-off impairment,” Soloviev said, adding that the refinery remains idled because it is cheaper for Rusal to buy alumina from the market than to produce at Friguia.
