Pahang MB anticipates further extension of the bauxite mining ban

Menteri Besar of Pahang, Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob has hinted that the moratorium on bauxite mining in the state might be extended for another three months after the current ban gets over on March 15.  It may be extended to June 15 considering the fact that unlicensed bauxite mining is still posing a threat to environment in Pahang. 

Media report says, villagers and residents of Felda Bukit Kuantan and Beserah have claimed that illicit bauxite mining is still continuing in the two areas.  

If reports are to be true, mining activities had continued despite the moratorium which had been in force since Jan 15 last year and extended several times.

"If we continue with the moratorium, genuine (legal) miners like the subsidiary (YP Mining Sdn Bhd) of Yayasan Pahang, will be adversely affected,” Adnan Yaakob has said.

"But, if we allow (the moratorium to lapse) I am worried we can lose control like before. Every Tom, Dick and Harry will have his field day where they simply dig out (the bauxite) (and) bring to the port, without considering the effect on the public,” he added.

He expressed his concerns while attending a meeting of retired teachers at Rumah Tamu Sri Gelora on Monday afternoon. He feared if mining continues, red dust from bauxite lorries will cover the surrounding areas again.

Adnan said that the government would decide on the further bauxite moratorium extension by June.

"Before we make a final decision, the state government has to sit down and consider properly what needs to be done." he concluded.
