Novelis expands coated aluminium solutions for electric mobility, energy storage

Novelis is extending its coated aluminium solutions to batteries and energy storage, transferring its automotive expertise to address the rising demand across electric mobility and stationary energy storage. Its portfolio combines high-performance aluminium sheet with surface technologies to improve manufacturing efficiency, component durability and application-specific material performance.
The aluminium solutions are aimed at battery enclosures, casings, electrical connectors such as bus bars and other critical battery components. They bring together lightweight performance, formability and corrosion protection, alongside electrical insulation capabilities where required.

By combining automotive-grade aluminium with advanced coatings, Novelis states that manufacturers can improve production reliability while reducing manufacturing complexity. The approach can eliminate the need for external lubrication and additional e-coating processes, while enabling the tuning of the material properties for particular battery applications.
High recycled content, low carbon aluminium also supports circular business models and sustainability goals.

A key element of Novelis’ expanded offering is its water-based coating technology, which has already been proven and is in use on the company’s advanced coating line in Germany.
The coating is applied to aluminium coils before forming and remains effective after stamping. This helps strengthen corrosion protection and formability while reducing manufacturing complexity and cost for battery producers.
The coating system can also be customised to provide electrical insulation, giving manufacturers greater flexibility to adapt the aluminium surface and material performance to battery specifications.
As battery manufacturers seek to lower the environmental footprint of their supply chains, aluminium offers a combination of lightweight performance, durability and recyclability. Novelis’ advanced aluminium solutions are designed to address these requirements while supporting increased recycled aluminium and closed-loop aluminium recycling.
