
Preliminary estimates indicate that aluminium demand in the United States and Canada (shipments by domestic producers plus imports) totalled an estimated 5.4 million tonnes through May 2019, a 1.1 per cent increase from YTD 2018. Demand for semi-fabricated (mill) products totalled 3.9 million tonnes, up 2.4 percent.
Demand for aluminium semi-fabricated (mill) products in the United States and Canada (measured in shipments by domestic producers plus imports) was up 1.9% YoY to an estimated 812,384 tonnes in May. Shipments of aluminium sheet and plate increased 5.9% YoY to 461,303 tonnes. Extruded product shipments declined 6.3 per cent YoY to 226,796 tonnes. Estimated shipments of aluminium ingot for castings, exports and other uses increased 9.2% to 297,557 tonnes in May.

Apparent consumption (demand less exports) in domestic markets totalled an estimated 4.8 million tonnes, up 2.3 per cent from YTD 2018. Exports of aluminium ingot and mill products from the U.S. and Canada (excluding cross-border trade) totalled 585,134 tonnes through the first five months of 2019, off 7.5 percent for YTD 2018. Imports were off 3.7 percent to 1.7 million tonnes.
Apparent consumption in domestic U.S. and Canadian markets increased 4.1 per cent YoY to 997,449 tonnes in May. Through the first five months of 2019, apparent consumption was up 2.3 per cent from YTD 2018. Producer inventories totalled 1.6 million tonnes in May, a slight decline from April and up 8.8 per cent YoY.
Imports of ingot, scrap and mill products into the U.S. and Canada (excluding cross-border trade) 16.7 percent YoY to 382,832 tonnes in May 2019. Including scrap, which accounted for roughly 60.2 percent of reported aluminium exports in May, exports increased 7.8% to 283,042 tonnes. Excluding scrap, exports were up slightly to 112,491 tonnes. Through the first five months of 2019, imports were down 4.0 percent to 1.8 million tonnes, while exports were up 6.3 percent to 1.4 million pounds.
