No mining rush: Minister

The environment and forest minister, Mr Satru-charla Vijayaramaraju, said that government will not go ahead on the proposed bauxite-mining project in the Visakhapatnam Agency without considering the opinions of locals and environmentalists besides a proper study on the impact of mining on the environment. The minister was here to release a couple of rare animals and birds at the Indira Gandhi Zoological Park, here on Wednesday.
Speaking to reporters on the occasion, the minister said though industrialisation or mining was able to boost economy besides generating employment, the environment was also polluted at the same time.
Earlier, residents of Vizagites had sacrificed lives to set up the Vizag Steel Plant here, but the same people were not now opposing it in the name of pollution in the city, he said. Government would, if necessary, take action against polluting industries in the city on the lines of Jeedimetla in Hyderabad, where nearly 165 highly polluting industries were shifted to other places.
Steps were also being taken to keep a tab on industries which pollute the environment and violate the norms of the Environment Protection Acts.
Talking about the proposed Tiger Zone in Adilabad district, the minister maintained that the project was going on despite stiff opposition from locals including tribals and NGO representatives.
While talking about the elephant menace in Srikakulam and Vizia-nagaram districts in the region, the minister said that they were preparing a permanent solution, and timely compensating crop loss due to the migrant elephants. Steps were being taken to check rampant red sanders smuggling and base camps would also be set up at forest areas to keep a tab on vehicular movement, he said.
