

At the Panchpatmali Bauxite Mines, part of the National Aluminium Company Limited (NALCO), nestled within the Mines and Refinery (M&R) Complex in Koraput, Odisha, a field inspection was conducted. This was conducted by Shri M. R. Prasad, a scientist from the Regional Office of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) in Bhubaneswar.
{alcircleadd}Conducting the field inspection was completely aimed at taking a clearer look at key operational areas and the environmental management practices in place at the mining site. Moreover, while on the visit, a thorough assessment of the mining operations was conducted to ensure they align with environmental regulations and legal requirements.

During the inspection, the MoEFCC official went through various operational zones of the Panchpatmali bauxite mines, which are a key source of raw materials for NALCO’s alumina refinery. Extra attention to the measures in place for environmental protection, such as land reclamation and mine rehabilitation practices, dust suppression and air quality management, as well as water conservation and drainage systems, was provided.
Additionally, waste management and ecological restoration initiatives were also highlighted in the inspection. With the inspection, the officials also verified the possibilities of implementing sustainable mining practices, which shall further ensure effective operational alignment with the environmental guidelines as established by the regulatory authorities.
