India’s aluminium industry is moving to expand domestic production of higher-value flat-rolled products, with new investments in rolling capacity and specialised materials highlighting the growing importance of advanced processing technology. However, imports continue to supply a substantial share of the country’s flat-rolled aluminium requirements, leaving scope for further development of domestic manufacturing capabilities.

The shift is visible in Hindalco Industries’ January 2026 commissioning of a 170,000-tonne-per-year flat-rolled products and battery-grade aluminium foil facility in Odisha. The project involved an investment of INR 45 billion (USD 490 million), while the company said nearly 40 per cent of India’s flat-rolled aluminium was being imported.

Hindalco expects its additional capacity to reduce that import dependence by nearly half, supporting domestic manufacturing and demand from electric mobility, packaging and advanced manufacturing.

Italian rolling technology manufacturer MINO has established MINO Rolling Technology India, a company based in Navi Mumbai that will connect Indian customers with the group’s engineering and manufacturing capabilities in Italy. The move builds on MINO’s existing relationships with Indian metals producers and its work supplying rolling equipment for domestic aluminium processing.

MINO builds on Jupiter Aluminium mill project

A key example of MINO’s work in India is the successful start-up of its four-high aluminium cold rolling mill at Jupiter Aluminium Industries (JUPALCO). MINO announced the successful rolling of the first coil at the facility on August 25, 2025, marking the equipment’s transition into production.

Designed to process aluminium strip up to 2,300 mm wide, the mill incorporates advanced process control and automation technologies. The project illustrates how specialised rolling equipment and process systems supplied by an international technology provider can support the development of India’s downstream aluminium manufacturing base.

Cold rolling is an important stage in producing aluminium strip with the required thickness, surface quality and flatness for subsequent applications. These products serve downstream markets including packaging, automotive, construction, electrical equipment and consumer goods.

MINO’s involvement therefore extends beyond establishing a local office. Its existing project work provides a practical link between its engineering capabilities and the requirements of Indian aluminium processors seeking to manufacture higher-value products.

Local operation connects Indian customers with global engineering

MINO Rolling Technology India will act as a local point of contact for customers and partners, covering activities from initial technical discussions and feasibility studies to engineering, project execution and after-sales technical service.

The company is intended to help MINO respond more quickly to local requirements while strengthening technical and commercial support. It will operate as part of the wider MINO Group, connecting Indian projects with the company’s engineering and manufacturing centres in Italy and its international business units.

“Our investment in India reflects the importance of this market for MINO and our commitment to being closer to our customers,” said Cesare Pettazzi, president of MINO. “The new local presence will allow us to combine our international engineering expertise with a stronger local support structure.”

This arrangement brings international equipment design and engineering closer to Indian customers without separating the local operation from MINO’s established global capabilities. It also provides a structure through which the company can support projects across different stages, from initial planning to commissioning and subsequent technical service.

Rolling technology spans aluminium, copper and steel

MINO’s technology portfolio covers hot rolling, cold rolling and foil rolling, alongside process control systems, automation, mill revamping and technical services. Its capabilities extend across aluminium, copper and steel, giving the Indian operation a potential role in projects beyond aluminium processing.

For aluminium producers, rolling technology is particularly relevant as domestic manufacturers expand their focus on flat-rolled products and specialised applications. Equipment performance, automation and process control influence the consistency and quality of the finished strip, while technical support can help customers manage commissioning and ongoing production requirements.

India’s downstream expansion and continued reliance on imported flat-rolled aluminium provide the wider industrial context for MINO’s local investment. The company’s new Indian operation, combined with its Jupiter Aluminium mill project, demonstrates how international technology expertise and domestic manufacturing investment can work alongside each other as the country develops its aluminium processing capabilities.
