Under the first agreement, Rio Tinto will supply METLEN with approximately 14.9 million tonnes of bauxite from the CBG mine in Guinea over an 11-year period, spanning from 2027 to 2037.

This bauxite supply will complement METLEN’s existing production from its local mines in Greece, ensuring a stable and diversified raw material source.

Under the second agreement, METLEN will supply Rio Tinto with 3.9 million tonnes of alumina from its expanded Agios Nikolaos refinery over an eight-year period, beginning in 2027. The agreement also includes an option for a three-year extension.

Jerome Pécresse, CEO of Rio Tinto Aluminium, said, “Rio Tinto is pleased to forge this long-term partnership with METLEN Energy and Metals, securing alumina supply for our operations in the Atlantic region to continue producing high-quality, low-carbon aluminium for our customers while strengthening our position in Europe.”

METLEN’s ambitious €295.5 million ($304.1 million) investment in the Aluminium of Greece plant in Agios Nikolaos, Viotia, announced in January, marks a significant milestone for the company.

Evangelos Mytilineos. Chairman and CEO of METLEN Energy & Metals said, “This strategic partnership with Rio Tinto is one more milestone for METLEN, ensuring a secure and competitive supply chain for our expanding alumina production. With these agreements, we strengthen our competitive position and deepen our presence in the global alumina market.”

This landmark project aims to establish an integrated production line for bauxite, alumina, and gallium, all of which the EU classifies as critical raw materials. Once fully operational, the facility will have an annual production capacity of 2 million tonnes of bauxite, 1.265 million tonnes of alumina, and 50 tonnes of gallium.

The development timeline targets the completion of bauxite production by 2026, with alumina and gallium output ramping up gradually from 2027, reaching full-scale operation by 2028.
