One of Malawi's touristic attractions earmarked as a world heritage centre is set to be explored for its bauxite and rare earth deposits.

Malawi, looking for cash to finance its huge budget funded with local resources since several donors withdrew its aid, has granted a Japanese company to "conduct exploration activities only on Mulanje Mountain and the surrounding areas.”

The Ministry of Natural Resources, Energy and Environment, said in statement it had granted an exploration licence to Spring Stone Limited, a subsidiary of Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation (JOGMEC) for the "exploration of bauxite and rare earth metals on top of Mulanje, which has over 28 million tons of proved bauxite reserves.

The ministry said it would particularly be keen to see that exploration or mining activities don’t have negative impact on the environment, especially in areas that have natural resources such as forest reserves, national parks and water bodies.
