India's aluminium sector prospering, but labour shortages hinder growth: Hindalco

EDITED BY : RUPANKAR MAJUMDER 2MINS READ

The aluminium industry in India shines amid a global landscape that is generally lacklustre or facing downturns. This positive outlook is attributed to the Indian government's efforts in infrastructure development and the industry's response to meet the increasing demand.

Nilesh Koul, the Senior President and CEO of Aluminium Downstream at Hindalco Industries conveyed this perspective during the aluminium conference in Barcelona. India already holds the position of the world's second-largest aluminium producer, and the country's aluminium consumption demand is expected to double over the next decade.

Koul added, "The energy in India right now is incredible. After five years working in Switzerland, I returned to my home country, and many other expatriates are also moving back to India.”

“India is due to ramp up metals consumption as China did. India's per capita aluminium consumption is only 3.1 kg compared to the world average of 12 kg and China's at 31.7.”

Koul said, "As China seeks to revive its economy and the West worries about tipping into recession, the Indian government is investing in infrastructure such as railways and airports, while housing construction and the auto industries are also booming. Aluminium demand in India is expected to jump to 9 million tonnes by 2033 from about 4.5 million this year."

He mentioned that the nation needs help in terms of obtaining project approvals, maintaining quality standards, and dealing with shortages of skilled workers.

The Hindalco expansion project for a flat rolled products plant faced delays this year due to recruiting only half the necessary 3,000 skilled labourers. It has been emphasized that the private sector should intensify its training initiatives in addition to government efforts.
